On bireversible automata and automorphisms of Cayley graphs

  • Every finitely generated group naturally sits as a uniform lattice in the group of automorphisms of any of its Cayley graphs. In this talk, we will explain how the commensurator of a finitely generated group in the automorphism group of its Cayley graph can be described using bireversible automata, which are finite combinatorial objects having their roots in computer science. We will then use this connection to study the distortion of cyclic subgroups in this commensurator.
