Abstract. After explaining the role of totally disconnected groups in the world of locally compact groups, I introduce well-known examples of simple totally disconnected locally compact groups, the so-called tree almost automorphism groups. I discuss what the correct notions of being finitely generated and finitely presented in the totally disconnected setting are and propose higher dimensional versions of these in a geometric fashion. It is joint work with Roman Sauer that the aforementioned tree almost automorphism groups satisfy these higher finiteness conditions which generalizes previous results by Adrien Le Boudec.
