Minerva summer school

Flows on homogeneous spaces

Department of Mathematics, Technion, Haifa

September 2nd - 6th, 2012

Haifa

The goal of this Minerva summer school is to introduce young researchers and PhD-students to the dynamics of homogeneous flows including some very recent developments. We will focus on actions of algebraic groups on homogeneous spaces of finite invariant measure. There will also be thorough background lectures on ergodic theory, algebraic groups and the rich theory describing their interplay.

This summer school is part of and mainly funded by the German-Israeli Minerva summer school program of the Minerva foundation.

Program

There will be 5 lecture series. The first lecture starts Sunday at 9:30, and the last lecture ends Thursday evening. The lectures series are:

  • Alex Furman (UIC, Chicago): Introduction to ergodic theory
  • Alex Gorodnik (University of Bristol): Ergodic Theory and rigidity of lattices
  • Manfred Einsiedler (ETH Zürich): Flows on surfaces | Ratner's measure classification theorem
  • Jean-Francois Quint (Universite Paris 13): Stationary measures on homogeneous spaces

In addition, there will be two special lectures by Elon Lindenstrauss.

Registration

If you want to register, please fill in the registration form [Download] and send it to Eline Zehavi [Center for Mathematical Sciences, Department of Mathematics, Technion]. Please note that the deadline to apply for funding has passed. We also ask you to take care of accomodation yourself if you register after July 15th.

Financial support

Along with your registration email you can indicate whether you are requesting financial support. The deadline to apply for funding is July 15th. We will tell you as soon as possible but at latest a few days after the deadline to what extend we can support your visit to Haifa.

Funding for this Minerva summer school comes mainly from the Minerva foundation for German-Israeli science cooperation. We are grateful for additional support from the following institutions:

For preparation

If you want to read about the topics of this summer school ahead of time, you might want to look at the book by Dave Morris or, especially for the courses of Manfred Einsiedler, at the upcoming book by Manfred Einsiedler and Thomas Ward.
